Insignificante
Joint exhibition at Xau Laura, Porto, from 16th May until 28th June 2026.
"Insignificant: without meaning or value; of no purpose, small.
These characteristics of insignificance are not intrinsic. Through attention, intention, and elaboration the insignificant is transformed into the significant.
What are the borders between significance and insignificance? How are they crossed? We take no notice of the insignificant until a change in perspective gives it significance - and this brings an opportunity to learn about ourselves and why, for us, certain objects, symbols or behaviours have no value. Perhaps we may find that insignificance lies in what we often consider most significant; life, death, reputation.
Inspired by examples in the everday and in our artistic practices, such as philosophical research and our relationship with materiality, the works examine how the transformation occurs. The materials used - branches expelled by the sea, offcuts, dying leaves - are leftovers, waste, scraps rescued from insignificance by our actions."
Created specifically for this exhibition were the works 'Small Blue Dot', and the installation '0123581321345589144233' (co-created with Eliana Manuel Pinho).
