Because She Changes

This quilt (2024, 200 x 150 cm) was created in response to ideas of memory of place, social memory in public monuments and their interaction with personal memories, for exhibition in Santander (Spain) in February 2025.

The inspiration was the massive public sculpture 'She Changes' by Janet Echelman, located in Matosinhos. It includes motifs representing sea, sky, waves, sand, mist and the moon. The hitomezashi patterns within the circles relate to good fortune and life beside the sea, such as fish scales and patterns used on traditional fishermans clothes.
